At the end of a weeklong conference in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia what better way to cap the experience than to honor the culture of the First Nation Salish peoples through story and song? Che oke’ ten, a member of the Vancouver Island Saanich tribe delighted an audience of enthusiastic librarians with traditional music and tales from his history and culture. Traditional creation stories and trickster tales where interspersed with evocative flute melodies and rousing Native American drumming. Che oke’ ten also shared Native sign language and used a call and response technique which could be easily adapted to storytime in any library. It is perhaps not an exaggeration to say that some participants sat in awe as, eyes closed, ancient forests were imagined, and Native American instruments soared with melodies that have graced this land and these shores for hundreds of years. Given the upcoming 2011 Summer Reading Program, World Cultures, it easy to imagine some of these same stories and songs paired with programs celebrating the culture of our Native American heritage here in the Northwest.

What’s the Big Idea? Introducing Math and Science Concepts to Young Patrons

Beth Rosania of the King County Library System and Jenny Grenfell of the Timberland Regional Library led a pre-conference prior to the recent joint WLA/PNLA conference in Victoria, B.C. that really added up! These dedicated children’s librarians illustrated how fun and easy it is to introduce math and science concepts into story times and into the simple activities that are part of the daily lives of our young patrons. A day later, the two presented a shortened version for a conference workshop.

Based on the nationwide Mother Goose program, What’s the Big Idea? uses picture books, rhyme, rhythm, and easy-to-create manipulatives to make math and science enjoyable at even the earliest of ages. Participants in this pre-conference were able to pair well-known, and some lesser-known, picture books with activities, learned to make their own manipulatives, and walked away with enough material and ideas to create their own What’s the Big Idea? program. Beth and Jenny even provided the participants with ready-made storytime programs—complete with stories, songs, games, and crafts. Even those among us who are math phobics will walk away convinced that What’s the Big Idea? really is a BIG idea whose time has come. Some of Beth and Jenny’s handouts can be found here.

This was my first CSLP meeting EVER. I asked myself, what will we do in three days, over eight hours a day, and not be ready to just die of boredom? I was pleasantly surprised at what was accomplished in those days and want to share my experiences with you.

We decided several things during this meeting. Sometimes it is hard to imagine that Summer Reading 2010 is nearly upon us, but plans are in play for 2011, 2012, and beyond as well. Different committees gave their reports for the year, and we learned a little about what it means to be a CSLP representative.

The artwork for 2011 was revealed. The themes and illustrators are listed below:

One World, Many Stories by Rafael Lopez

You are Here by Svetlana Chmakova

Novel Destinations by David Moore

The overall theme for 2012 is Night, and slogans were chosen:

Dream Big — Read (Children)

Own the Night (Teen)

Between the Covers (Adult)

There were artists chosen to ask to do artwork for 2012:

Children — Helen Correll, Jen Corace, Daniel Kirk, Chris VanAllsburg, and Brian Lies

Teen — Gris Grimly, Cosmic Debris, Kazu Kibuishi, Christian Furfhausen, Brandon Dorman

The general theme for 2013 is Underground.

Representatives from Highsmith brought tons of plastic toys and fun things to show off as possible prizes for 2011. I am serving on the vendor committee, so I may be asking those who read the blog to give me feedback on toys and incentives!

NEW this year are several online resources that will be FREE all summer. Go to the webpage and check it out!

http://teachingbooks.net/cslp for youth services.

http://teachingbooks.net/cslpt for teen services.

I want to close by plugging the CSLP website that is FREE and full of great resources and information. All you need to do is register! Go to www.cslpreads.org and register to access the following resources — open to all WA public library staff:

Under Family Literacy — an early literacy program based on ECRR 6 skills (complete programs)

Under Downloads – PSAs and the 2010 signing video

Follow directions on the website to register and allow 24-48 hours for approval.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, I am here as your CSLP rep to answer your questions. Please feel free to email me anytime! ~~ Tracy Rebstock

Scratch is a free software tool developed by the MIT Media Lab, allowing libraries to offer relevant, technology-based and creative programs for kids ages 8 and up. It can be used to create animation and game projects that incorporate music, sound, original art, digital photographs and more. Learn how to use this software, explore the Scratch social network, and create and share their own project and become a member of the online Scratch community. Some computers will be provided, but we encourage participants to bring their own computers, with Scratch already downloaded.
Jennifer Nelson is the Senior Librarian at the Hennepin County, MN, Library.
Please solicit your institution’s library staff, board members and volunteers for suggestions as to who they think should be nominated for this prestigious award. The winner will receive recognition at the annual conference.

The CAYAS Award for Visionary Library Service to Youth recognizes individuals who, through their practice and example, provide inspiration and leadership for others who serve children and young adults in libraries. Those eligible to be nominated for this award include staff or volunteers from public, school or special libraries. The work that qualifies an individual for nomination may include cumulated efforts over several years in the field of library service to youth, or may be a singular and exceptional effort that sets new standards for practice. The purpose of the award is not only to commend the individual who will receive it, but also to appreciate and bring attention to the remarkable and tireless efforts of all individuals who work with young people in libraries.

The completed nomination form (scroll down to the bottom of the page) may be submitted by email, or you may mail them directly to:
